Abstract

A series of novel 5-oxo-1-(thiazol-2-yl)pyrrolidine-3-carboxylic acids were synthesized via condensation of 2-aminothiazole derivatives and itaconic acid by heating without a solvent. An ester and amide of 1-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-5-oxopyrrolidine-3-carboxylic acid were obtained. 1-(6-Nitrobenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)- and 1-{5-[(4-nitrophenyl)sulfonyl]thiazol-2-yl}-5-oxopyrrolidine-3-carboxylic acids exhibited bacteriostatic activity against the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 strain.
